Francesco Draisci

Exhibitor db London 2001 - 2003

Francesco Draisci"I am an Italian architect based in London. I worked with big companies but I started to get personal exposure working on the design / production of Designers Block show at the Jam Factory. I also was given the chance to produce an installation in that fantastic industrial context.

I have always been inspired by the Designersblock formula of displaying design work (in a very broad sense) in disused buildings, sometimes as dramatic as derelict. It makes a background to "ideas at work" that is every time very unique and diverse. Also the buildings and the areas surrounding them get new fresh life. I greatly respect people having the courage to act in such a way (more ideas, less money!) on slices of the built environment. It does a lot for the re-generation of obsolete parts of cities.

Besides the experience enrichment, a personal achievement has come after every time I participated in one of the shows: one commission with Corian and Dornbracht, a show at the V&A.

I have always wondered why designers and business-people prefer to meet in confusing and predictable trade fairs around monotonous, undifferentiated exhibition cubicles.

Fresh ideas and new scenarios could certainly grow better in a more friendly and less frantic atmosphere. I find that Designers Block is every time a promise of an un-formal and un-packaged surprise waiting to be discovered. A temporary place for everyone (exhibitors and visitors) willing to dive into design stories and moods rather than design collections of items."
