Tokyo
2004 at the Five Day Galleries in Roppongi.
It’s not every life where you get to produce a show in an old apartment block in the middle of Roppongi but that’s Tokyo for you. For five days there was an international community of designers hiding from monsoons in a warren of tiny rooms and staircases.
Visitors made their own graphics as a running commentary to the show. Will Barras was artist in residence and decorator of a red room work in progress at all times. The Oculas stayed downstairs. One Off from Italy showed In Dust We Trust , a rapid manufacturing facility involving many designers with results that were like very modern things that had been dredged from the seas. Charlotte Karlsen showed glasses and vases and Bermuda Shorts made a Cinema. The soundtrack for the week was provided by Rob Thompson’s tiny light up radios and Charlie Davidson provided transport by way of Wheeler Stools.
