London
2004 June at the Farmiloes Building, Clerkenwell EC1
After the success of the Biennale we thought we would use the Farmiloes building for designersblock. The sprawling but easy to navigate Victorian warehouse complex proved to be one of our most charming venues yet.
Visitors walked gangways from big rooms to mazelike office suites where Batman was filmed and the big sunny courtyard made for a warm festival atmosphere after the industrial containment of the T Building. After last years Queues we held three parties on consecutive evenings so that everybody could come, making for relaxed nights where people could see the work and talk to each other.
Pokia launched the hugely successful P Phone now renamed the Hulger P Phone, the chaps from Poke stalked about merrily in lab coats demonstrating the wonders of the antidote to anonymous mobile design.
The Scottish Show continued in a very big shed. We had live painting from Will Barras of Scrawl Collective making a backdrop for a brace of Oculas that he had decorated earlier with samurai. Vexed Generation showed new clothes for Puma. Clay station made an interactive city of Plasticene that grew throughout the show. From Asia we had design is coffee and Designersplanet two collectives of young designers that epitomised the raw creativity from the other side of the world.
Medessin launched a range of furniture and Elumin8’s showed there’s still hope for young British manufacturing. The Irish Furniture Network returned without their vodka bar thank god as did Donna Wilson & Carmel Mcelroy with dolls and lights. John Angelo Benson returned with more corrupted classics.
